The city of Pergamon has never been object of a special exhibition, not even in the museum of the same name. Now, this extensive exhibition at the Pergamonmuseum for the first time presents the hellenic metropolis at the cost of Asia-Minor with all its aspects: 3-D-panoramas, virtual models, plus numerous sculptures, mosaics, inscriptions and artworks illustrate Pergamon’s importance as centre of art and science within the Greek World.

The exhibition project “Pacific Standard Time. Art in Los Angeles 1950-1980” traces the development of the Los Angeles art scene during the post-war period, when the city on the Pacific hosted an impressively varied and versatile art scene, thus proving that it was more than Hollywood and a sprawling metropolis in the land of sunshine and palm trees.

Cézanne, Warhol, Picasso, Braque, Beuys and many other artists explored the issue of the media which both informed and even inspired much of their output. Yet how do contemporary artists deal with the press today? Staged in Berlin's Martin-Gropius-Bau, the exhibition ARTandPRESS presents key exponents of the contemporary international art scene whose works examine the current state of the press, as a daily opinion-forming institution and mediator of information, and the associated questions relating to perception, reality and truth.

Every May the most significant theatre professionals from Germany, journalists and international guests meet in Berlin. The centrepiece of the Theatertreffen are the ten “most remarkable productions” selected each year by an independent jury of critics from around 400 plays presented in one season. This presentation of the best in German-language theatre is accompanied by a varied programme of further events: public debate with renowned guests from culture, politics and business creates links between theatre and social and political issues.

Diane Arbus (New York, 1923–1971) revolutionized the art she practiced. Her bold subject matter and photographic approach produced a body of work that is often shocking in its purity, in its steadfast celebration of things as they are. Her gift for rendering strange those things we consider most familiar, and for uncovering the familiar within the exotic, enlarges our understanding of ourselves.

Every autumn, Berlin is transformed into a sea of colour and light. A series of dazzling lights lend their own special brilliance to a host of Berlin’s famous sights, including the Brandenburg Gate, the TV Tower, the Berliner Dom Cathedral, the Funkturm radio tower and many more. The stunning nightly light show comes with art actions and cultural events on the topic of light. The city’s unusual, magical light attracts lots of visitors, with special Lightseeing tours offered by bus, boat or Velotaxi – and even on a nightly Light Run.

An exhibition of the German History Museum
Curator: Dr. Monika Flacke
The exhibition is an initial attempt to take a look at European art since 1945 without the usual ideological demarcation lines that came about with the Cold War. Twelve chapters will examine the different ways in which artists have dealt with the ideals of Enlightenment and the belief in universal human rights, freedom, equality and democracy. Selected works will be seen within the framework of the project as visual expressions of ideas and concepts that have the potential to change the world.

In 1912, when Hugo von Hofmannsthal wrote "Jedermann", a new version of the medieval morality play "Everyman", he found he had created a modern classic. In the last hour of his life, a man is abandoned by friends and possessions – and the story gradually unfolds around the universal themes of repentance and the meaning of life. For 25 years, the Jedermann Festival has been a permanent fixture on the Berlin arts scene. Every year, a star cast vows the audience performing against the dramatic backdrop of the Berlin Cathedral, director: Brigitte Grothum. The performance is in German.
